Alter Botanischer Garten, Botanical garden in central Munich, Germany.
The Alter Botanischer Garten is a public green space in Munich's center with pathways, native and exotic trees, and a central Neptune fountain at its heart. The layout follows a carefully planned geometric design with lawn areas and planted sections arranged to invite visitors to pause and explore.
Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell designed this garden in 1804 as Munich's first scientific botanical institution. The site was abandoned in 1914 when the collections moved to the new facilities at Nymphenburg.
The garden serves as a public gathering space where local residents walk, rest on benches, and spend time among the trees. It also hosts rotating art exhibitions and events that remain part of Munich's cultural calendar.
The garden sits near the main train station and is easy to reach on foot or by public transit. A café with a beer garden is on-site where you can bring your own food, and benches throughout the space offer places to rest.
The entrance gate was built by Emanuel Herigoyen and remains one of the few surviving Classicist structures from the garden's founding era. This gate still speaks to the original architectural vision of the scientific institution.
