Fürstenberg sits at the western shore of the Oder River where the Oder-Spree Canal joins, creating a significant waterway intersection in Brandenburg.
The settlement received its first documented mention in 1286 as a customs post and was later acquired by the Cistercian monastery of Neuzelle in 1316.
The preserved Gothic Nikolai Church and neo-Gothic town hall form the center of the historic district, representing centuries of architectural development.
The district maintains its administrative functions within Eisenhüttenstadt through the Fürstenberg Citizens Association, established in 1991.
The district experienced a major transformation in 1961 when it merged with Stalinstadt to form the current city of Eisenhüttenstadt.
