Güntzwiesen, Urban open space in Dresden, Germany
Güntzwiesen is an urban open space in Dresden that stretches between Blüherstrasse and Lennéstrasse, connecting the Bürgerwiese to the south with residential buildings along Grunaer Strasse. The grounds contain several sports facilities including the Dynamo Dresden stadium and the Georg-Arnhold public swimming pool.
The area was established in the 19th century through a foundation created by Justus Friedrich Güntz, from whom the space takes its name. The northern section received the name Cockerwiese in 1988 following a major rock concert that took place here.
The northern section, known as Cockerwiese since 2016, serves as a stage for circus performances and classical music events in the open air. Visitors can enjoy live music regularly during warmer months and experience diverse cultural performances here.
The space is well-organized with distinct areas for sports and leisure, making the swimming pool and stadium easily accessible. Visitors should be aware of seasonal conditions and changing arrangements when events are scheduled.
A remarkable detail is the story behind the name Cockerwiese, which comes from a major rock concert that took place here in 1988. This event was among the largest rock performances in East Germany at that time.
