Haus Pietzsch, Office building in Mitte, Berlin, Germany
Haus Pietzsch is located at Unter den Linden 42 and features a narrow six-story structure with large windows that flood the interior office spaces with light. An interior atrium connects the floors vertically and serves as the building's central organizing element.
Architect Jürgen Sawade designed this building, which was completed in 1995 during Berlin's post-reunification redevelopment phase. It represents the wave of new construction that transformed historic streets like Unter den Linden after the fall of the wall.
The ground floor houses Café Einstein, creating a welcoming gathering space for visitors and workers alike. A tall interior atrium displays artworks from the collection of patron Heiner Pietzsch distributed across its multiple levels.
Due to its narrow width of about 16 meters, the building incorporates a car elevator in the basement to access the parking facilities. Visitors should keep in mind that the limited ground-level width gives the building an unusual appearance and makes vertical organization essential.
The interior atrium functions as a vertical art gallery extending across all floors and displaying works in an unconventional layout. This transforms a standard office building into a space where visitors encounter art continuously as they move through the structure.
