Zollernhof, Office building in Dorotheenstadt, Berlin, Germany.
Zollernhof is an office building and architectural heritage monument along Unter den Linden in Berlin that combines an original structure with an eleven-story U-shaped addition. The complex features a glass-covered internal courtyard that links the different wings and allows natural light to reach deeper areas of the building.
The building was constructed according to architect Thomas Baumann's design to house the Berlin studios of ZDF television and the headquarters of VEBA AG. The combination of preserving the historic original structure while adding modern construction reflects the needs of the post-war period.
The building shapes the streetscape with its distinctive U-shaped footprint and glass-covered courtyard that brings daylight to work areas inside. Visitors can observe how the protected historic facade coexists with contemporary workspace design to serve the needs of a major broadcasting institution.
The building is accessible from Unter den Linden and contains five basement levels with additional work areas. The multi-level layout makes it worthwhile to allow time for exploring the different functional zones throughout the structure.
Beneath the deepest levels are multiple television studios, with one larger than 300 square meters located at ground floor level. These studios form part of an extensive technical infrastructure that allowed the building to function as a broadcast center.
