Haus Wohnung

Haus Wohnung is a water castle in the Möllen district of Voerde featuring red brick walls with light sandstone around the windows and connected courtyards. The building is topped by a distinctive domed tower.

The castle originated in the 13th century as a seat of the van der Wonyngen family and was transformed into a knight's residence by 1400. This conversion reflects how noble families adapted their homes to serve as fortified dwellings.

The interior rooms display preserved Baroque ceilings decorated with floral motifs typical of noble residences in this region. These ornaments show how wealthy families chose to decorate their homes during that period.

The castle grounds and adjacent park are accessible on special open days, particularly during Heritage Day celebrations. The water mill with its historical machinery can be viewed during these events.

The water mill was first documented in 1478 and still produces flour during public demonstrations using its original machinery. This operating mill is uncommon and demonstrates craft techniques from centuries ago.
