Ruine Berneck, Medieval castle ruin in Schramberg, Germany.
Ruine Berneck is a castle ruin from the medieval period that stands on a forested rocky hill at about 620 meters elevation near Schramberg. Visitors can still see stone walls, a residential tower, and a moat up to 3 meters deep that show how this fortress was once laid out.
The castle was built before 1230 by stonemasons who also worked on Ramstein Castle. The site later belonged to the Lords of Falkenstein and Ramstein, who held it for generations.
Archaeological excavations between 1960 and 1963 revealed ceramic goblet tiles from 1250 to 1275, indicating medieval residential structures within the castle grounds.
Plan your visit by using the existing paths that lead to this ruin perched on a hill surrounded by forest. The ground can become slippery when wet, so wear good shoes and allow time to walk slowly through the site.
Mason marks carved into one block of the ruin match exactly with marks found at Ramstein Castle. This detail suggests the same builder oversaw the construction of both sites.
