Kananohe

Kananohe is a protected nature reserve near Langenhagen featuring mixed forests of oak and birch trees. The land contains several drainage channels that carry water through the woodland toward the Auter River system.

The area has a long history of forest management dating back to the 1800s. A significant change came when a natural forest reserve was formally established here in the 1970s, marking a shift toward conservation-focused practices.

The reserve serves as a place where locals go for forest walks and wildlife observation, providing a natural space for outdoor activities. People visit to experience the woods and find moments of quiet away from urban surroundings.

The reserve can be accessed from Kananoher Strasse where a path leads into the wooded area. Wear sturdy shoes and stay on marked routes to safely explore the woodland terrain.

Approximately 11 hectares of this site was designated as a natural forest reserve in the 1970s where logging is prohibited. This section accumulates decaying wood that provides habitat for rare insects and fungi, allowing the forest to develop without human intervention.
