Kontinuität, Stone sculpture in Frankfurt financial district, Germany
Kontinuität is a granite sculpture standing next to Deutsche Bank headquarters in Frankfurt's financial district, displaying an interlocking looped form. Rising approximately 4.5 meters tall, the work carves out a flowing shape that appears to fold back on itself in the urban setting.
A Swiss artist created this work in the mid-1980s as a commission from Deutsche Bank during a period when major corporations were integrating art into their urban environments. The installation became part of the bank's headquarters transformation and modernization.
The sculpture displays an endless loop form that blends mathematical concepts with the urban setting where people walk past daily. Those who circle around it experience the visual continuity that shapes the artwork's presence in the space.
The sculpture stands in the public green space next to the bank towers and can be viewed from multiple angles without entering any building. Walking around the entire work helps visitors understand how the form changes depending on where you stand.
The raw granite block came from Sardinia and was hand-carved in Italy before being transported to Frankfurt for final installation. This elaborate process was required because the stone was far too large and heavy to move by conventional means.
