Museumshafen Oevelgönne, Harbor museum in Altona, Germany
Museumshafen Oevelgönne is an open-air harbor museum on the northern bank of the Elbe in Altona, preserving around 20 historic ships from different periods. The vessels are moored along jetties and quays and can be viewed from the outside or explored on the inside through guided visits.
The museum was founded in 1976, making it the oldest institution in Germany devoted to preserving historic ships from northern German coastal regions. The collection has grown since then and documents Hamburg's ties to seafaring across several centuries.
The ships on display here were once working vessels on the Elbe and the North Sea, including tugboats, icebreakers, and police boats. Walking along the quays gives a direct sense of how Hamburg once operated from the water.
The site is best explored on foot by walking along the quays and reading the information boards placed throughout. Those who want to see inside the vessels should check in advance when guided tours are available.
One of the ships, the former ferryboat D.E.S. Bergedorf, now houses a café serving traditional Hamburg food. Guests eat on board a vessel that once carried passengers across the Elbe.
