Leintalzoo Schwaigern

Leintalzoo is a 14-hectare facility with natural ponds, flower meadows, and specialized enclosures housing around 250 animals from roughly 40 species. The space combines open viewing areas with landscaped settings that allow visitors to see animals in environments resembling their natural habitats.

Founded in 1980 by Peter Geßmann following the rescue of orphaned chimpanzees from Cameroon, the zoo grew from this compassionate beginning. The facility evolved into a center dedicated to primate care and rehabilitation.

Chimpanzees are central to the visitor experience here, with their daily feeding times showcasing natural social behaviors and family bonds. This focus on primate life shapes how people move through and understand the space.

Germany's largest chimpanzee group of 30 individuals lives here across two spacious outdoor enclosures with glass viewing panels. This setup enables close observation without disrupting the animals' natural routines.
