Lutherbuche, Historical tree site in Altenstein, Germany

The Lutherbuche memorial stands as a 10-meter obelisk made of Seeberger sandstone, featuring a square column crowned with Gothic elements near Altenstein Castle.

On May 4, 1521, Martin Luther was intercepted at this location by soldiers of Elector Frederick the Wise during his return from the Diet of Worms.

The memorial site includes inscriptions from the Old Testament and represents a significant location for Protestant history in the Wartburg region of Thuringia.

The monument lies two kilometers southwest of Steinbach, accessible through paths near Altenstein Castle and Park, with the Rennsteig trail running north.

When the original beech tree fell in a storm in 1841, its wood was distributed to create memorial pieces found today in Germany, England, and Sweden.
