Altenstein Palace, Renaissance revival palace in Bad Liebenstein, Germany.
Altenstein Palace is a residence built in the Renaissance Revival style in Bad Liebenstein. The facade shows curved windows, round bay windows, and chimneys topped with obelisks, giving the building its characteristic appearance.
Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen commissioned the palace between 1888 and 1890 to replace a simple baroque structure from 1736. The duke was a major supporter of the arts and used the new residence for cultural events.
The name Altenstein comes from a medieval fortress that once stood on the rock above the valley. Visitors today can walk through the park and see how the duke used this place as a summer residence for musical evenings and social gatherings.
Access to the grounds is possible through several paths that wind through the landscape park. For visitors with limited mobility, some areas may be difficult to reach as the terrain is hilly and includes natural slopes.
A memorial to Johannes Brahms is located inside, as the composer visited here several times between 1894 and 1895. The rooms now show how closely connected the duke was to the musical world of his time.
