Oberburg Heldenbergen, Medieval castle in Nidderau, Germany

Oberburg Heldenbergen is a fortified residence on a steep slope overlooking the Nidder River, with three wings arranged in a U-shape built during the 17th and 18th centuries. The complex includes medieval foundations, a gatehouse, stables, and a barn constructed using traditional half-timbered techniques.

The castle traces its origins to the Lords of Heldenbergen in the 12th century, with Gieselbert von Heldenbergen serving as the first burgrave of the Imperial Castle Friedberg. Over time, the property changed hands among various noble families and evolved into a residential castle.

The north side displays the coat of arms of the Hattstein family on its timber-framed upper section, while the main entrance shows the von Rohde family emblem. These heraldic symbols reflect the noble families who shaped this place through the centuries.

The property remains private property and is not regularly open to visitors. The complex can be best observed from public areas around the location, such as nearby streets or the slopes of the Nidder valley.

The founding family held a key position in the imperial administration of nearby Friedberg, connecting this castle to the broader medieval power structures of the region. This link makes it an important testament to how local noble houses influenced imperial affairs.
