Altes Schloss Büdesheim, Renaissance castle in Büdesheim, Germany
Altes Schloss Büdesheim is a three-winged castle from the Renaissance period that encloses a southern inner courtyard. The eastern wing preserves an older core structure, while the western wing houses a chapel.
The castle originated as a water castle between Windecken and Niederdorfelden fortifications and was gifted to Michelsberg Abbey in Bamberg around 1017 by Emperor Heinrich II. By the 1500s it was known as Brendelstein under the ownership of Johann Brendel von Homburg.
The courtyard draws visitors who notice the blend of architectural styles accumulated over centuries of use. The west wing chapel indicates the site's earlier role in the spiritual life of its residents.
The building currently serves municipal functions and is partially accessible to visitors during specific occasions. Ongoing renovations including elevator installations are making all floors easier to reach for public activities and events.
A heraldic stone from 1558 on the east side displays the historical name Brendelstein and marks a specific ownership period. This artifact shows how the building carried different names across its long history.
