Pipe organs of Freiburg Minster, Medieval pipe organs in Freiburg Cathedral, Germany.
The pipe organs of Freiburg Minster are a group of instruments placed at several points inside the Gothic cathedral. The main organ sits in the nave, while smaller instruments occupy the choir and the tower sections of the building.
The first organs were installed in the minster during the 15th century, while the building was still being completed. The current main organ was built by Johannes Schmidt in the late 19th century and has been revised several times since then.
The organs accompany both religious services and secular concerts in this house of worship. The instrument plays a central role in the city's music calendar and draws musicians and listeners from different musical traditions.
The organs can be heard during services and concerts that take place regularly in the minster. Checking the cathedral's event calendar before visiting is a good idea, as access to certain areas may vary depending on what is scheduled.
In 2019, a new console was installed in the tower section, with three separate manuals that can only be controlled from the main console across the building. The connection between the two runs entirely through the walls, so most visitors walking through the nave have no idea it exists.
