Sigmund Jähn Spaceflight Planetarium, Planetarium on Peißnitz Island, Halle, Germany
The Sigmund Jähn Spaceflight Planetarium is an observatory on Peißnitz Island featuring a 12.5-meter dome that projects star fields and can accommodate 130 visitors at a time. It also houses a specialized observatory with a Coudé refractor telescope for detailed sky observation.
The planetarium originally opened in 1978 and was later relocated to a repurposed gasometer building on the island. A comprehensive renovation completed in 2021 transformed it into its present form.
The planetarium is named after a pioneering German cosmonaut whose achievement connected this city to space exploration history. Visitors today experience that legacy directly as they explore the exhibitions and shows within.
The location on an island makes it readily accessible by car or public transport for most visitors. Check the schedule in advance, as shows and exhibitions have set times throughout the week.
The facility contains a specialized Coudé refractor telescope that was transferred from the Johannes Kepler Astronomical Station, giving it access to rarely seen observational equipment. This telescope came from a historic research institution and offers visitors a glimpse of professional astronomy tools.
