Ruine Zindelstein, Medieval castle ruin in Donaueschingen, Germany.
Ruine Zindelstein is a medieval castle ruin near Donaueschingen situated at approximately 750 meters above sea level. The remains include a square keep measuring 7.50 meters on each side with walls about two meters thick at their base.
The castle was built in the 12th century by the Counts of Zähringen to guard the road between Breisgau and Villingen. It was destroyed during the Peasants War in 1525.
The site is surrounded by local tales, including stories of a crusader knight returning with treasures and children discovering a secret passage to Tannheim monastery. These narratives continue to shape how people in the region think about this place.
The ruins stand on private property between Furtwangen and Wolterdingen, so visitors should watch for posted access restrictions and signs. Respecting these notices and the property boundaries is important for continued access to the site.
A landslide in 1970 partially destroyed the southern outer bailey section, permanently altering the medieval structure. This makes the ruins today a record of both medieval history and modern geological events.
