Sauerlandkaserne, Military barracks in Lennestadt, Germany
Sauerlandkaserne was a military complex spread across three locations in the Lennestadt area. It consisted of a main barracks, a missile launch site near Hirtenberg, and a fire control station near Buchhagen.
Construction started in 1960 and the base became operational in 1962 as a Luftwaffe and US military installation. The site closed in 2002 after the Cold War ended and was later redeveloped as an industrial area.
The site reflects the shared occupation of German and American military forces who worked together on the grounds. Visitors can sense how this international military presence shaped the facility's layout and purpose.
Parts of the grounds are accessible to the public today, though many areas are limited due to industrial redevelopment. The guard house is one of the few well-preserved buildings visible from the perimeter of the site.
The base housed Nike Ajax and Nike Hercules air defense missiles that could be armed with either nuclear or conventional warheads. This dual control arrangement reflected how closely German and American forces worked together during the Cold War.
