Schlosskirche Putbus, Lutheran parish church in Putbus, Germany
The Schlosskirche Putbus is a three-nave hall church with basement and tower located in the castle park near the Swan Pond and Orangery. It features an organ system with 13 registers across two manuals and pedal, plus three steel bells cast in 1893.
A fire destroyed the original castle chapel in 1865, leading to the conversion of the ballroom in the park into a church. This transformation was completed in 1891, creating a new place of worship within the castle grounds.
The church displays ornate chandeliers rescued from a castle fire, while the altarpiece by Daniele Crespi shows the removal of Jesus from the cross.
Visiting during daylight hours works best to see the interior furnishings clearly. The location within the castle park means you can easily explore the area on foot along with other monuments in the grounds.
The church displays late classical architecture with a basilical cross-section, setting it apart from the typical brick churches of Rügen Island. This unusual design came about because the building was originally conceived as a ballroom.
