Putbus, Seaside resort town in Rügen Island, Germany
Putbus is a seaside town on Rügen Island that spreads across several connected districts. Wide streets and green spaces shape the landscape and link the different residential areas together.
A prince established Putbus in 1810 as his residence and designed it according to neoclassical ideals. This planned development shaped the structure and appearance of the entire town that remains today.
The white buildings shape the townscape with their uniform style from the early 1800s. This appearance still reflects how one nobleman wanted to create an orderly and organized place.
A narrow gauge steam railway connects Putbus with neighboring towns and makes it easy for visitors to explore the island. Walking through the town is also straightforward thanks to its wide, well-organized streets.
The town comprises about thirty separate villages, each maintaining its own character while following the white building style. This arrangement makes it an assembly of different smaller settlements within one deliberately designed urban area.
