Haus auf dem Kopf, Inverted house attraction in Putbus, Germany
Haus auf dem Kopf is an inverted building in Putbus, a small town on the island of Rügen, Germany, where the roof rests on the ground and the foundation points upward. The structure sits on an open plot that visitors can walk around to take in the full effect from every side.
The building opened in July 2010 and was built using a heavy steel frame that holds the entire structure in place. It was one of the first buildings of this kind in Germany and quickly drew visitors to Putbus.
Inside, the building shows a complete German home with bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom, all seen from above. Everyday objects like sofas, lamps, and dinner plates appear from an angle that most people never experience.
The building is open year-round and charges an entry fee. Since the interior spaces are disorienting by design, it helps to take your time and move slowly through each room to get the most out of the visit.
All the furniture inside, from beds and wardrobes to kitchen appliances, is fixed to the ceiling, which is actually the original floor of the house. Walking through the rooms gives the feeling of moving through a real home while standing on your head.
