Schul- und Bürgergarten

The Schul- und Bürgergarten is a park spanning roughly 9 hectares around Lake Dowesee with an English garden style layout, a medicinal plants collection, and a rosarium. The site contains distinct garden sections cultivating plants from different regions and for different purposes.

The garden was founded in 1919 as Brunswick's school garden under the direction of Georg Michael. This original site underwent a major expansion in the 1950s.

The garden serves as a regional environmental education hub where visitors can learn about plants and nature through guided experiences. Local communities use this space to develop a stronger connection with the natural world around them.

The circular path around Lake Dowesee is well-constructed and was renovated in the early 2000s to remain walkable during wet conditions. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and expect flat terrain throughout the site.

The garden houses one of Northern Germany's largest collections of medicinal and culinary herbs, primarily located in its eastern section. This extensive plant collection regularly draws visitors interested in traditional remedies and herb cultivation.
