The Schul- und Bürgergarten spans 9 hectares around Lake Dowesee, featuring an English garden, medicinal plants collection, and a rosarium.
The park originated in 1919 as the main school garden of Brunswick under director Georg Michael, with a significant expansion completed in 1953.
The garden functions as a regional environmental education center, offering workshops and educational programs for schools and environmental research activities.
The circular path around Lake Dowesee underwent complete renovation in 2004, raising the entire pathway by 35 centimeters to prevent water logging.
The garden maintains one of Northern Germany's largest collections of medicinal plants and culinary herbs in its eastern section.
