Schauenburg, Medieval castle ruins near Friedrichroda, Germany
Schauenburg consists of stone remains of a medieval fortress on a mountaintop about 1.5 kilometers southwest of Friedrichroda. The walls and foundation remnants spread across the summit and provide views over the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest.
Construction was authorized in 1044 and the fortress later served as a protective stronghold for Reinhardsbrunn monastery founded around 1085. The castle played an important role in territorial control during the medieval period.
The ruins are woven into the landscape and remind visitors of the area's medieval past. Local guides and residents often share stories about the castle's role in shaping the territory around it.
Hiking trails lead from Friedrichroda up to the ruins, with some routes forming loops across several kilometers. The paths are walkable and offer viewpoints across the surrounding landscape.
Composer Max Wagner visited the ruins in 1892 during his stay in the area and later wrote a symphonic work inspired by the site. This musical connection shows how the location moved artists of that era.
