Schloss Oefte, Heritage castle in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Schloss Oefte is a moated castle in Essen, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, built close to the Ruhr River. The main building has a compact, steep-roofed structure typical of the region, surrounded by water on at least one side and open green areas.
The castle dates back to the medieval period and served as the seat of a local noble family for generations. Over the following centuries it changed hands several times and was gradually altered to suit new owners and new uses.
Schloss Oefte sits along the Ruhr River and today draws walkers and day-trippers who come more for the surroundings than the building itself. The grounds feel like a riverside park, and the castle adds a historical backdrop to what is otherwise a relaxed outdoor spot.
The castle sits along the Ruhr Valley cycling route, which makes it easy to reach on foot or by bike from nearby towns. Not all areas of the grounds are open to the public, so it is worth checking in advance what can be visited.
The castle stands in Kettwig, a district of Essen that was an independent town for centuries before being absorbed into the city in 1975. This setting makes it one of the few surviving manor-type structures within what is otherwise an industrial urban area.
