Kattenturm Essen

Kattenturm, also known as Burg Luttelnau, is a stone defensive tower built in medieval times that stands along the Ruhr River in Essen's southern district. The structure displays thick walls and a compact form typical of fortifications from that era.

The tower was built in the early medieval period as a defensive installation to monitor and control movement along the Ruhr. Over centuries it underwent several modifications and eventually was transformed into a restaurant while keeping its medieval core.

The name originates from local legends about a cat and today the place functions as a restaurant serving regional cuisine within its historic walls. Visitors experience how the medieval structure has become a gathering space for dining and socializing.

The restaurant opens Tuesday through Sunday with lunch and dinner service at different times. A garden overlooking the Ruhr and a mini-golf course are available to enjoy, and reservations are recommended for visits.
