Charlottenhof in Essen, Architectural ensemble in Essen, Germany.
Charlottenhof is a building complex on elevated ground along the southern banks of the Ruhr River in Essen. The site contains a church consecrated in 1981 and various modernized structures from the 1960s renovation.
Entrepreneur Friedrich Flick commissioned architect Paul Schultze-Naumburg to design the original villa during the 1920s. After its destruction during World War II, the complex was completely rebuilt in the 1960s.
The site houses the Youth Education Center St. Altfried, run by the Diocese of Essen for the local community. People in the area use the facilities for classes and events that are part of everyday life here.
The grounds are accessible to visitors through guided tours that show the church building and renovated structures. It is worth checking in advance for current opening times and tour offerings.
The foundations of the original 1920s villa were deliberately preserved and integrated into the new construction during the 1960s renovation. This shows how parts of the site's earlier history continue to exist within its modern buildings.
