Schloss Schöneck, Medieval castle in Boppard, Germany
Schloss Schöneck is a medieval castle near Boppard, sitting on a rocky outcrop above the Ehrbach Gorge and made up of a trapezoidal central fortress, outer fortifications, and a rectangular tower. The compound spans several levels that follow the natural slope of the hillside.
The castle was built around 1200 under Conrad of Boppard, an imperial official, and stayed with his family until 1508. After that it changed hands several times before eventually passing to the Wilhelm and Ida Steinhausen Foundation.
The painter Wilhelm Steinhausen purchased the castle in 1910 and created many landscape paintings and portraits during his time here. His artistic presence shaped how the building is remembered today as a creative space.
The castle is privately owned and opens to visitors only at certain times, so it is worth checking ahead before making the trip. The approach along the hillside can be uneven, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
Between 1846 and 1848, the castle was used as a milk cure spa, a rare and unexpected role for a medieval fortress. The painter Wilhelm Steinhausen later bought it in 1910 and used it as a working studio, giving the building yet another life far removed from its original purpose.
