A Roman fort called Baudobriga once stood on this site, and its walls were later incorporated into the medieval fortifications. The settlement gained town rights during the Middle Ages and later came under the rule of the archbishops of Trier.
The name derives from the Roman settlement Baudobriga and has evolved into its current form over centuries. Local winegrowers work the hillside vineyards and welcome visitors to cellars where they store barrels and explain their craft.
The railway station sits close to the river promenade and offers regular train connections along the Rhine valley. Many paths in the town center are paved and run over gentle inclines between historic buildings.
The old Hospital zum Heiligen Geist has existed since medieval times and still serves as a social institution today. Some cellar vaults in the town use Roman masonry that has survived through the centuries.
