Liebenstein Castle

Liebenstein is a stone castle overlooking the Rhine valley with fortified walls and towers that display medieval military engineering. The structure consists of several connected buildings built across the steep hillside terrain.

The castle was founded in 1284 and served to control trade routes along the Rhine. It remained the residence of various noble families across centuries who ruled over the territory.

The castle demonstrates how noble families displayed their power along the Rhine by constructing massive stone buildings visible from great distances. Walking through it gives visitors a sense of the importance such fortifications held in the region's everyday life.

Visitors can reach the castle from Kamp-Bornhofen via marked hiking paths that become quite steep. The best time to visit is April through October when guided tours are available and trail conditions are most reliable.

The castle forms a mirrored pair with the neighboring Sterrenburg, standing like two sentries on opposite sides of the river. This double fortress arrangement was a practical solution for defending and monitoring the crucial transport corridor.
