St. Severus

St. Severus is a Romanesque parish church in Boppard marked by two tall towers topped with pointed helmets that rise above the Rhine's banks. The building features thick stone walls typical of the medieval period and decorative vaulted ceilings inside.

The church rose during the 12th century on land where Roman military structures once stood as part of an ancient fort. Construction continued across several phases until the 13th century to achieve its current shape.

The interior displays objects from different periods that reflect how people worshipped here over the centuries. These furnishings and artworks show the religious practices of medieval communities in the Rhine valley.

The main entrance sits on Rheinallee in the center of Boppard, with nearby parking and a path from the riverfront nearby. Inside, wide passages allow you to move through the spaces, though some stairs lead to the upper gallery if you want to explore higher.

The vaulted ceiling in the nave features an unusual spider web pattern decorated with colors that stands out among churches in the Middle Rhine area. This detailed ceiling work shows the skill of medieval builders who created this site.
