Stadtbefestigung Jüterbog

Stadtbefestigung Jüterbog, Medieval city walls in Jüterbog, Germany

The Jüterbog city walls are a medieval fortification system built from stone that once enclosed the town and protected its inhabitants. The structure includes multiple defensive towers, projecting bastions, and three main gatehouse towers that reflect different building periods.

Construction of the fortification began around 1300 to meet the growing defense needs of the expanding town. The city walls are first documented in written records from 1335, indicating an established defensive system.

The three preserved gates named Dammtor, Zinnaer Tor, and Neumarkttor represent different architectural periods and defensive strategies of medieval German fortifications.

The fortification remains are open year-round without any admission fee. Wheelchair accessibility is available throughout the site, making it easy for visitors of all abilities to explore.

The round gatehouse of Zinnaer Gate was built from fieldstone around 1300 and ranks among the oldest defensive structures in the Brandenburg region. This tower still displays the original construction methods from this early building period.
