Haus Dr. Estrich, Modern residence with medical practice in Jüterbog, Germany
Haus Dr. Estrich is a modern residence with an integrated medical practice in Jüterbog, built in 1929. It comprises a cubic residential tower and a single-story extension positioned directly alongside the medieval town wall, combining both functions within one structure.
Architect Konrad Wachsmann designed the house between 1929 and 1930 as his first independent project for physician Dr. Georg Estrich and his wife Emmy. It became a significant work in the development of modern construction, establishing ideas that would later influence residential design.
The house demonstrates how modern living and professional work could coexist under one roof. The separate entrances allow the medical practice and residence to operate independently, revealing how people organized their lives in the 1930s.
The building features separate entrances and staircases for the medical practice and residence, keeping both areas completely independent. Large windows throughout flood all spaces with natural light, creating a pleasant working and living environment.
This residence is the only brick building Wachsmann ever constructed, setting it apart from his typical working methods with other materials. A medicinal herb garden was planted around the medieval tower, blending harmoniously with the historic surroundings.
