Thüringer Zoopark Erfurt, Large zoological park in Erfurt, Germany

Thüringer Zoopark Erfurt is a large zoological garden that spans a wide area and houses more than a thousand animals from about 160 different species. The grounds combine enclosures with modern facilities and traditional areas where visitors can encounter wildlife in various ways.

The zoo was founded in 1959 and started its collection with yaks from the Pamir region, bison, and camels from Kazakhstan. Over the decades, it grew into a major zoological garden with expanded facilities and new areas for different animal species.

The zoo preserves a traditional German farmstead called Axmanns Hof, where visitors can see domestic animals in their historical agricultural setting. This area shows how animals were once part of rural farm life and work.

The zoo is easy to reach by public transport and sits outside Erfurt's city center. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and plan enough time to explore the various sections of the large grounds.

The zoo features an African savanna section where zebras, ostriches, and antelopes live together in a shared habitat. This arrangement lets visitors see multiple animal species in a landscape that mirrors their natural environment.
