Roter Berg, Mountain summit in northern Erfurt, Germany
Roter Berg is a summit in northern Erfurt that rises 40 meters above the surrounding basin. The area now features protected habitats that developed on former clay mining land.
The first Erfurt airport opened south of the mountain in the 1920s as a commercial facility. Military forces took over operations in 1939 and used it throughout the Second World War.
The name comes from the reddish-brown sandstone that gives the mountain its distinctive appearance. Local brick makers once used this stone as their main material for production.
The location is easy to reach from Erfurt's city center and offers trails for exploring the landscape. Walking conditions are best from May through October when weather is most stable.
Medieval vineyards once covered the southern slopes, reflecting the region's warmer climate at that time. A pest called phylloxera later destroyed this wine production entirely and ended that local industry.
