Tippelsberg

Tippelsberg, Summit in Bochum, Germany.

Tippelsberg is a hilltop in northern Bochum that rises 150 meters above sea level and stands about 40 meters higher than the surrounding land. Multiple pathways lead to the summit, including a winding route and a children's path marked with steel posts indicating places of interest.

From the 1980s through the 1990s, the site served as a dumping ground for construction waste and soil from the U35 subway line project. This industrial use significantly altered the hill's shape and illustrates how the Ruhr region was reshaped by urban development.

The name comes from an old legend about a giant named Tippilus who supposedly shook clay from his shoes while walking through the area. This story remains part of local identity and is still shared with visitors today.

The hilltop is accessible by several marked trails suitable for different fitness levels. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the season, as the elevation exposes you to weather and wind.

Eight viewing platforms at the summit feature specially designed peepholes that direct your gaze toward specific city landmarks and industrial monuments across the Ruhr region. These instruments help visitors systematically explore the surrounding landscape and understand its key features.
