Werratalbrücke, Road bridge in Bad Salzungen, Germany
Werratalbrücke B 62 is a road bridge spanning approximately 1600 meters across the Werra Valley with a steel composite construction and road deck positioned under the main structure. The design was specifically developed for this valley crossing to provide stable passage over the deep terrain.
The bridge project began planning after German reunification and was included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan, with initial design work starting in 2015. It aims to fill a long-standing gap in regional transportation connections.
The bridge design takes into account the habitat of the corncrake bird in the wetlands below, showing how infrastructure projects consider local wildlife. Visitors can see how environmental concerns shape modern construction in this area.
The bridge is currently in planning stages with construction expected to begin around 2026 near the Bad Salzungen rescue station area. Visitors should be aware that traffic disruptions in the region are possible during the construction phase.
When completed, this bridge will become the longest road bridge in Thuringia, breaking the existing length record for the region. The comparison with existing structures reveals the remarkable engineering challenges of this project.
