Württemberg, Historic paddle steamer in Magdeburg, Germany
The Württemberg is a paddle steamer from the early 20th century that now serves as a museum ship in Magdeburg. The vessel still features its original paddle wheels and compound steam engine from the time it was built.
The ship was built in 1909 and worked as a tugboat on the Elbe River until 1974. It was then relocated to Magdeburg where it became a museum ship.
The vessel tells the story of how river workers relied on steam power and tugboats to move goods along waterways. You can see the machinery and crew spaces that made daily work on the river possible.
You can walk through the ship and see the engine room and crew quarters up close. There is also a restaurant onboard where you can have a meal or drink.
The original two-cylinder steam engine remains onboard and shows the craftsmanship of early shipbuilders. Few tugboats have kept their engines in this condition.
