St. Lambertus, Church in Erkelenz
St. Lambertus, also known as the Immerather Dom, was a church in Erkelenz built in the Romanesque Revival style. The structure remained until its demolition in 2018 in the North Rhine-Westphalia region.
The church was built in 1891 and became a prominent feature of the Immerath community. Demolition began in 2018 as the land was needed for brown coal mining.
The church was the spiritual center of Immerath and shaped community life for generations.
The site is located in North Rhine-Westphalia and can be reached by public transport. A tour on location is no longer possible, but the grounds can be viewed from outside.
The demolition was watched and photographed from around the world as it marked a turning point in the debate over energy production and the environment. Many images captured the building in its final moments before it disappeared.
