Südpark, Public park in Erfurt, Germany.
Südpark is a public green space built on the grounds of a former cemetery and covers several hectares with mature trees and multiple pathways throughout. The area provides ample space for walking and spending time beneath large, well-established trees.
The site served as Südfriedhof cemetery from 1871 until 1978, when it was converted into a recreational park. This transition from burial ground to leisure space reflects how the city adapted the historic grounds.
Two memorial sites within the park honor Polish citizens who perished in nearby camps and victims of the 1945 bombing raids.
The area is easily accessible by public transport and provides parking nearby for those arriving by car. Flat pathways make the park accessible for people with varying mobility needs.
Parts of the current pathway system still follow the original layout of the cemetery, creating an invisible connection to its past. This hidden layer of history often goes unnoticed by visitors during their walks.
