Alter Markt, street in Hildesheim, Germany
Alter Markt is a square in central Hildesheim surrounded by historic buildings with traditional facades. The street running through the square connects Kardinal-Bertram-Straße to Magdalenenkirche and serves as a passage between different parts of the city.
The square is first mentioned in 1146 and developed as a market location after the trading center relocated from an earlier site to Andreasplatz around 1140 and then to its current location around 1250. After World War II, some buildings and street layouts were altered, but the square retained its role as a central meeting point.
The square takes its name from being the city's oldest trading place, where residents have gathered for centuries to conduct business and exchange news. Today visitors can observe locals meeting, sitting in cafes, and moving through the daily rhythm of the neighborhood.
The square is easy to reach on foot and is served by several tram and bus lines for public transport. Benches and cafes surround the square where you can rest and observe the surroundings.
A replica of the Schauteufelskreuz sculpture stands on the square, created from parts of an original cross from the 15th century. This artwork reminds visitors of religious and craft traditions deeply rooted in the city.
