Großvaterfelsen

The Großvaterfelsen rises 317 meters above sea level at the western end of Teufelsmauer, featuring sandstone formations and metal safety railings at its peak.

The sandstone layers of Großvaterfelsen formed 85 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period and were later lifted by geological forces along the Harz edge.

The summit displays a weather vane from 1998 and serves as checkpoint number 76 for hikers collecting stamps in the Harzer Wandernadel system.

Visitors can start their hike from the Gasthof Großvater parking area, following a marked trail that takes approximately 15 minutes to reach the summit.

The formation includes natural stone steps, narrow passages between rocks, and handrails that guide climbers through different difficulty levels to reach the observation point.
