Roskilde Abbey
Roskilde Abbey is a monastery-turned-church in Roskilde, Denmark, with roots going back more than 800 years. The structure features tall stone towers, thick walls, ornate tombs, and stained glass windows arranged within a peaceful interior space.
The monastery was founded in the 12th century as a Benedictine convent and later became a burial place for Danish royalty and nobility. The Protestant Reformation of 1536 brought major changes, forcing the monks and nuns to leave and ending its role as a religious community.
The abbey served as a royal church and religious center for centuries, shaping the town's identity and faith. Today, it hosts concerts, ceremonies, and gatherings that keep its role alive in the community.
The site is located in central Roskilde and is easily walkable from the town's main square, surrounded by shops and cafes. A large parking garage sits just five minutes away on foot, making it simple to visit by car.
The abbey is connected to Saint Margrethe of Roskilde, a 12th-century noblewoman whose tomb became a pilgrimage site believed to hold miraculous powers. Though never officially canonized, her shrine drew visitors seeking blessings and healing for generations.
