Scala, Copenhagen, Entertainment venue opposite Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Scala was an entertainment venue opposite Tivoli Gardens, featuring a circular concert hall equipped with 73 electric lamps and a spotlight tower. The illuminated tower cast light onto the surrounding pavement and streetscape at night.
The original pavilion was built in 1846 by Kongens Klub, dismantled for railway station construction, and later reconstructed at Axeltorv and Vesterbrogade. Between 1912 and 1927 it operated as Teatret before being demolished in 2013 to make way for new development.
The venue hosted operettas and revues that brought together Danish and international performers for live entertainment. These shows reflected the popular tastes of the time and drew crowds seeking theatrical experiences.
The site was located directly opposite Tivoli and was easily accessible on foot from the surrounding streets and squares in the city center. Visitors could reach it conveniently from nearby areas without difficulty.
In 1882 this became the first building in Copenhagen to be fully equipped with electric lighting throughout. This technological innovation was groundbreaking at the time and made it a symbol of modern urban progress.
