Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder

Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder is a school building on H. C. Andersens Boulevard featuring elaborate decorative reliefs and pilasters framing the windows in Historicist style. Following major renovations in 2018, the protected monument now contains twenty residential apartments within its walls.

Founded in 1876 as a school for women, this building operated exclusively for female students until 1961 when male students were first admitted. The institution was created to provide training that major academies refused to offer to women at that time.

This school opened doors for women to learn drawing and craft skills when major academies excluded them from such training. The building itself stands as a physical reminder of how women created their own artistic spaces when traditional institutions closed them out.

The building sits directly on H. C. Andersens Boulevard in the city center and is easy to reach on foot. Since it is now a private residential building, you can view the exterior facade but cannot enter the interior.

Charlotte Klein served as the first principal without receiving a salary, while her husband Vilhelm Klein designed the building and led the board. This unusual partnership shaped the institution from its very beginning.
