City Hall Square, Public square in Copenhagen, Denmark
City Hall Square is a public square in Copenhagen, Denmark, situated in front of the Copenhagen City Hall. The square covers 9,800 square meters (105,000 square feet) and is bordered by H. C. Andersens Boulevard and Vester Voldgade, with Strøget and Vesterbrogade leading away from it.
The square was built on the site of the old hay market and the Western City Gate, which was demolished in the 1850s. After the fortifications were disbanded, the area hosted the Nordic Exhibitions of 1872 and 1888, and the current City Hall was completed in 1905.
The square often hosts demonstrations, celebrations, and buskers, and its surrounding buildings feature some of Denmark's largest neon signs. The Weather Girl, a gilded sculpture on the Richs Building, rotates to show whether the forecast is for clear weather or rain.
The square is a major hub for buses and the metro, with the City Circle Line station opening in 2019. Visitors can easily walk to nearby attractions like Tivoli Gardens and Strøget, and the area is flat and accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
Archaeologists found 20 graves from the 1000s under the square, revealing a previously unknown church and cemetery. The square is also the most expensive location in the Danish board game Matador, similar to Monopoly.
