Politigårdens Fængsel, Maximum security prison in Copenhagen Municipality, Denmark
Politigårdens Fængsel is a modern correctional facility in Copenhagen Municipality designed to house up to 250 inmates across multiple buildings. The complex combines security requirements with contemporary amenities including cells with unbarred windows, flat-screen televisions, private bathrooms, and access to shared kitchen facilities.
The facility was designed by CF Møller following a design competition in 2010, with construction beginning in 2012 and opening in 2020. This project represents a contemporary approach to prison architecture that differs from earlier models.
The facility displays art installations throughout its spaces as required by Danish law, with sculptures outdoors and decorative elements in shared areas. Visitors can observe these artistic works as part of the daily environment for those held here.
Access to the facility requires prior arrangement and security screening, as it remains an active correctional institution. Visitors should expect that certain areas may be restricted and that visiting times can be limited.
Inmates tend a kitchen garden on the grounds where they grow vegetables and directly participate in food sourcing. This gardening activity teaches them practical skills in cultivation and self-sufficiency.
