Tivoli Gardens, Amusement park in central Copenhagen, Denmark
Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park in the Danish capital spread across several themed areas and featuring more than 30 rides, restaurants, and stages for live performances. The site combines classic carousels with newer attractions and emphasizes green spaces and illuminated facades.
Georg Carstensen founded the park on August 15, 1843, after King Christian VIII granted permission to use land outside Copenhagen's city walls at the time. The park quickly developed into a gathering spot for all social classes.
The wooden Pantomime Theatre from 1874 stages shows influenced by Italian stage traditions while preserving its original architectural appearance. The venue still relies on silent gesture and mime, which draws in visitors without language barriers.
The park opens seasonally with changing hours and requires an entrance fee plus extra charges for individual rides. Annual passes are available, as well as reduced rates for children.
The wooden roller coaster Rutschebanen has run since 1914 and employs a brakeman on each ride who manually controls the speed. Worldwide, only six other coasters still operate with such a system.
