Thor's Fight with the Giants, Bronze statue in Odense Municipality, Denmark
Thor's Fight with the Giants is a bronze statue in Odense that depicts the Norse god in battle stance with his hammer Mjölnir raised high. The composition shows carefully modeled musculature throughout the figures and captures the moment of intense combat between god and giant adversaries.
The sculpture was created by Carl Johan Bonnesen in 1918 and initially placed on Thorø island. In 1957, it was relocated to Odense through a complex winter operation that involved temporarily separating the different parts.
The sculpture portrays Thor fighting giants, a theme that captured the imagination of Danish artists during the 19th century revival of Norse mythology. This work reflects how ancient Nordic stories inspired creative expression across the nation.
The monument stands on elevated ground next to the former Haustrup Factories along Næsbyvej, making it visible from multiple angles. The location provides ample space to view the bronze figure from various positions around the statue.
During the 1957 relocation, the hammer Mjölnir had to be separated from Thor's body and transported separately. Power lines were also temporarily adjusted overnight to allow the heavy bronze figure to reach its new location.
