Valby Gasworks, Industrial heritage site in Valby district, Copenhagen, Denmark.
Valby Gasworks is a former gas production and storage site in the Valby district of western Copenhagen, Denmark. The grounds covered a wide area between local roads and included several brick production buildings alongside large cylindrical gas holders.
The facility opened in 1907 to produce coal gas for Copenhagen and was later converted to serve only as a storage site. Operations came to an end in the early 1960s after more than five decades of use.
The gasworks name comes directly from the Danish word for gas and the Valby district where it stood, making its identity straightforward and tied to the neighborhood. Today visitors walking through the area can see how former industrial brick buildings have been kept as part of the residential development around them.
The site sits close to Valby station, making it easy to reach by train from the city center. A daytime visit works best for seeing the redeveloped buildings and green areas around the old industrial ground.
An explosion on the site in 1964 led to a major review of industrial safety rules across Denmark. The event was recorded by national broadcasters and is still referenced in discussions about workplace safety in the country.
